Xinjiang Korgas checkpoint quarterly freight hits 370,000 tonnes

IMPORT and export cargo through northwest Xinjiang Korgas rail checkpoint has maintained rapid growth to reach 370,000 tonnes in the first quarter of the year, reports Xinhua.

Aggregate cargo volume has surpassed two million tonnes since it started operation in December 2012. Cargo volume through the checkpoint is expected to hit 20 million tonnes in 2020 and 35 million tonnes in 2030.

Deputy head of the checkpoint Ma Yinong said the major outbound category of goods are containers, mostly sent to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrghyzstan from Tianjin, Lianyungang and Shanghai.

Inbound goods mainly include mechanical and electrical equipment, large machinery and excavating machines.

The Korgas checkpoint is the second international rail checkpoint in Xinjiang apart from Alataw Pass and a national class 1 checkpoint in western China with shortest distance to the major cities in central Asia.

Increasingly shipments from Lianyungang, Beilun, Qingdao and Chongqing have been sent to Central Asia and Europe through the rail checkpoint.
