Global Maritime Industry Leaders Prepare To Descend On Dubai For BIMCO 2014 Annual Conference And Awards
Coping with maritime disasters and the importance of effective maritime regulations are the focus of global maritime industry leaders attending the BIMCO Annual Conference and Awards in Dubai next week (29 April).
Held under the patronage of HHSheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, and with the support of Dubai headquartered DP World, hundreds of shipping experts from around the world will take an active role in two major sessions:
Track 1.Double Jeopardy: alive and interactive simulation of a complex maritime casualty - the mess, the media and the mediators
A role-playing exercise of a simulated maritime casualty, with delegates live-voting on the outcome. Those involved include ship owners, the legal profession, industry insurers, arbitrators and the media.
Track 2.Insight on regulatory requirements that may affect your ticket to trade
Regulatory changes coming into force over the next decade are more challenging than ever before. What are the challenges facing ship owners and the industry on mitigating the impact the shipping industry has on the environment, both air and oceans.
DP World Chairman HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem will give the keynote address to open the conference on April 29.
Angus Frew, Secretary General and CEO of BIMCO, said: "Next week's event promises to be one of the most important gatherings of our industry in recent years as we focus on two major themes affecting us all.
"Amidst the chaos following a maritime disaster ship owners must retain clarity looking after the welfare of any passengers and crews whilst minimising damage to the environment. We are involving the media and other key players in an exercise designed to show how to handle such an event. This will be a lively and interactive session.
"Meanwhile, environmental protection of our oceans is an ongoing focus of regulators around the world and during the second major session we will explore the implications of that attention on our industry and what we can do to mitigate the environmental impact of shipping."
The conference concludes with the BIMCO Awards Gala Dinner on the evening of 29 April 2014, with the presentation of the first ever prestigious BIMCO Awards to shipping companies and individuals who have excelled in reflecting BIMCO's global activities.
