LA March box volume up 42pc, Long Beach down 1.9pc on customer loss
THE Port of Los Angeles posted a 42 per cent year-on-year increase in imported container volume in March to 327,497 TEU, while export throughput was up 21 per cent to 187,826 TEU.
The supposed good fortune was ascribed to the timing of the Chinese New Year factory shutdown in China, which was favourable to this year's statistics.
But this could not cushion the poor showing at the adjacent Port of Long Beach where March container volumes fell 1.9 per cent following the suspension of services by some lines and switches to the neighbouring Port of Los Angeles.
Long Beach also pointed to the harsh winter conditions in the Midwest and on the east coast as reasons for the slowdown.
Long Beach moved 477,209 TEU during March with imports making up 223,432 TEU, down 0.7 per cent year on year while exports fell 1.5 per cent to 153,883 TEU.
Long Beach pointed out that last year's figures represented the third-busiest year in the port's history, during which the port handled 6.7 million TEU.
