EU scores transport: Top marks to Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark
ON the European Commission's EU Transport Scoreboard, which ranks member states in 22 categories across all modes, the Netherlands came out on top with Germany, Sweden and Denmark close behind.
Taking into account passenger and freight performance, the scoreboard weights infrastructure, sustainability, regulatory compliance, innovation, safety and other measures among road, rail, maritime and air transport, reported American Shipper.
Scoring is done by noting how many times a member state appears among the bottom five performers in a given category. This is subtracted by the number of times it appears near the top.
The Netherlands only appeared in the top group in 11 of the categories without appearing near the bottom. Germany also appeared near the top 11 times, but near the bottom once.
Scorekeepers said the Netherlands took top spot in the scores because of its port and air infrastructure. But it came second to Germany in the World Bank's logistics rankings.
Germany ranked high in a number of performance indicators in the scoreboard, but toward the bottom for "open infringements in air transport."
"The new scoreboard is a fantastic tool that shows visually where we stand in making our transport systems more efficient, more customer-friendly, safer and cleaner," said EC vice president Siim Kallas.
