China and Japan impose restrictions on US live pig imports

China has restricted imports of live pigs from the US amid worries over a fatal swine virus, according to US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and livestock-industry officials.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that the news contributed to jitters on the US lean-hog futures market, which fell two per cent to a one and a half-week low.

China, the world's largest consumer of pork, has asked the USDA to conduct testing and provide certification that live hogs come from herds that are free of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, a USDA spokesman said.

China and Japan have imposed restrictions on US pig imports until their agriculture ministries reach agreements with the Americans on testing protocols, Reuters reports.

The restrictions are on shipments of live US animals that are used in breeding programmes. Last year, China bought US$20 million worth of US breeding stock.

Last month, Beijing announced plans to stockpile frozen meat to support the market, where prices have slumped to three-year lows and farmers are losing money on their hogs.
