2,810-TEU feeder runs aground on HKU's Pok Fu Lam sports grounds
THE 2,810-TEU Hansa Constitution western shores of Hong Kong Island after a "mechanical failure", according to fire officials to arrive to find the ship loaded with containers run aground near the seawall.
Video shot by resident Kevin Sites went viral on Facebook and Youtube, showed the ship curving in a wide arc before heading straight for shore. Mr Sites said he had been alerted after hearing a loud screeching noise.
The ship, owned by Hamburg-based Hansa Treuhand Gruppe, appeared to have dropped anchor as it approached the seawall, slowing it to a standstill. Hansa Treuhand Gruppe said probable cause was loss of power while going to Shenzhen's Chiwan terminal.
The ship was pulled away from the University of Hong Kong sports ground at Pok Fu Lam by tugs and anchored while it was taken in hand by the Hong Kong Marine Department for further investigation.
