Canadian minister squelches global warmist hopes for Arctic passage
CANADA's Tranport Minister Lisa Raitt squelched global warmist hopes that a northwest passage though the Canadian Arctic for shipping was coming any time soon, Reuters reported.
"I don't think the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal have any worries in terms of competition with the Northwest Passage," Ms Raitt in a visit to Wasington.
Logistical challenges to large-scale sea shipments within the Arctic Circle mean such trade will not be a near-term rival to existing routes, she said.
Insurance companies are beginning to weigh the hazards of sea traffic across waterways in northern Canada and investors are mulling the potential using Arctic trade routes, she said.
"Bringing those gigantic containerships through areas where it is shallow, first of all, and there are not a lot of navigational markers, it is far riskier than other routes," she said.
This echoes the opinion of the Washington-based Arctic Institute. "Future shipping in the polar region will mostly consist of seasonal destinational transport, delivering supplies into the Arctic. Apart from these niche opportunities, Arctic Shipping will be unable to compete the world's existing major trade routes," it said in a report last month.
