Vessels collide causing oil spill, leaving Houston congested amid clean-up
A COLLISION between two vessels just off the Texas City Dike in Houston has left a major shipping channel for crude oil closed for a third day as the clean-up from the 4,000-barrel spill continues.
The US Coast Guard said 43 ships were waiting to leave the port of Houston and 38 ships were waiting to come in, up from 40 outbound and 35 inbound on Sunday evening, reported Reuters.
Two crew members were taken to hospital for treatment after the incident exposed them to hydrogen sulphide.
The Houston Ship Channel to Texas City, Galveston and the Intracoastal Waterway was shut on Saturday following a collision between a Kirby Inland Marine oil barge and a cargo ship, spilling 4,000 barrels, or 636,000 litres, of residual fuel oil.
A warning to mariners issued by the Coast Guard on Sunday said portions could be closed until at least March 29, depending on the requirements of the clean-up.
