Guangdong initiates long-term, comprehensive green ports plan
GUANGDONG's provincial transportation authority has announced a plan to promote environmental friendliness at the ports in the province and to reduce energy consumption and pollution emission, Xinhua reports.
The first stage is to cut port energy consumption eight per cent by 2015 and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 10 per cent compared to 2005. Meanwhile, the province aims to develop conversions to electric, rubber-tyre gantry cranes (RTG).
The second stage is, to reduce the port's energy consumption 10 per cent by 2020 by 2005 emission standards. By 2020, all RTGs in the province will be converted to electric power.
Guangzhou and Shenzhen will be the key ports in the plan. Shenzhen will be the first to carry out the conversion of the port-area trailer trucks from fuel-powered to LNG-powered (liquefied natural gas). Then the scheme will be promoted in Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Zhanjiang, Shantou, Dongguan, Huizhou and Zhongshan.
