Union Pacific invests US$4.5 million on Nebraska/Iowa transport upgrade

THE Union Pacific Railroad (UP), the largest North American freight line, is to invest US$4.5 million from non-taxpayer funds in Nebraska and Iowa transport systems.

The development of the states' infrastructure will support a rail line between Nebraska's Omaha and near Missouri Valley, Iowa to begin March 4 and complete by end of May.

The project is one of 1,500 improvements over UP's 32,000-mile network to improve operational efficiency, safety and reduce motorist waits at crossing.

The freight line will replace 31,700 concrete railroad ties and install 16,670 tons of rock ballast along the line from Nebraska to Iowa. Crews will also renew surfaces at 29 road crossings.

Benefits include improved and additional freight capacity, reduction in highway congestion and a cleaner environment due to the shift of 300 trucks by every one UP train. Each freight train can move a ton of freight on a single gallon of fuel alone, said a company statement.
