Forwarders' WCA Conference abandons riotous Bangkok for Hong Kong

THE WCA Conference Week for freight forwarders, to be held this month in Bangkok, has pulled up stakes because of the civil strife in the Thai capital and postpone the gathering until May 11-18 when they meet in Hong Kong.

Comprising the 16th WCA First Conference, the 6th WCA Worldwide Conference and the 2nd WCA Relocations Conference, the event will now be held at AsiaWorld Expo, adjacent to Hong Kong International Airport.

"Although there was no direct threat to foreign visitors, there was a fatal incident adjacent to our main conference hotel in the days leading up to the event," said WCA president David Yokeum.

With over 2,500 logistics executives having confirmed their participation at the original event and 160 meeting booths booked, the challenge of rearranging the event at a new location in such a short timescale were significant. However, the conference venue, high-quality hotel options and local government support are all in place, a statement from the organisers said.

"We have ensured that no participant will be out of pocket on their travel arrangements due to the switch and we look forward to hosting over 70,000 individual meetings that will see the independent freight forwarding sector generate millions of dollars in new business," he said.
