LA and Long Beach blame Chinese New Year for February cargo decline

LONG BEACH and Los Angeles both blamed Chinese New Year for lower cargo volumes in February than in the same period last year.

Said Long Beach: "Cargo numbers were affected by the Lunar New Year. The holiday fell on January 31 this year, and it started a two-week period during which many businesses in Asia close their doors. Production is minimal and business is slow."

A total of 517,173 TEU moved through Long Beach during February, a decrease of 2.6 per cent. Also at Long Beach, imports totalled 271,671 TEU, down 2.7 per cent; exports totalled 143,572 TEU, up 2.1 per cent and empties totalled 101,930 TEU, down 8.3 per cent.

Los Angeles's overall container volume decreased 9.1 per cent in February year on year to 431,738 TEU, with imports dropping 10.6 per cent to 284,812 TEU and exports falling 6.2 per cent to 146,925 TEU.

"The decrease is due in part to the Chinese New Year, which closed many factories in Asia for two to three weeks in February. Last year, the holiday had a negative impact on March container volumes," said the LA port authority.
