Deutsche Post fourth quarter pre-tax profit up 7pc, as DHL rises 13pc
DEUTSCHE POST has announced fourth-quarter earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of EUR885 million (US$1.23 billion), an increase of seven per cent year on year driven by its express division, and marking a strong end to a positive year.
However, a strong Euro pulled down the group's fourth revenues by 0.6 per cent to EUR14.5 billion.
Full year revenues in Europe rose 4.9 per cent to EUR5.9 billion. Deutsche Post, which has grown into a global logistics concern under the DHL brand after the German post office became a listed company in 2000, generates 45 per cent of its express revenues in Europe, reported Reuters.
DHL, comprising Express, Global Forwarding and Supply Chain divisions, saw fourth quarter EBIT increase 13.3 per cent to EUR637 million.
The group anticipates that EBIT this year will rise to between EUR2.9 billion and EUR3.1 billion, compared with EUR2.06 billion in 2013, with the DHL logistics division generating EUR2.1 to EUR2.3 billion.
DHL reported operating profit of EUR2.1 billion in 2013. Profit from express in the fourth quarter alone grew 14.3 per cent to EUR320 million.
"The economy may improve a bit. But we think that a strong global m recovery will take more time to materialise. Nonetheless we intend to continue our positive earnings momentum," said CEO Frank Appel.
