Yangtze River shipping center to boost local development
A shipping and logistics center located in the upstream portion of the Yangtze River in China is expected to boost the development of the Panxi-Liupanshui region, which is likely to benefit regions located along the longest river in Asia.
China's State Council has confirmed the construction of three major shipping centers along the Yangtze River — the Shanghai international shipping center located downstream, the Wuhan shipping center located mid-stream and the Chongqing shipping center located upstream. Another shipping and logistics center located upstream of the river is expected to be launched soon.
Former Sichuan official Xie Hong stated that China should redistribute the shipping sectors upstream of the Yangtze River because the area could effectively boost the entire Yangtze River economic belt. A shipping and logistics center could, therefore, be built in the eight cities bordering the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou.
On Mar. 1, Sichuan's Yibin, Panzhihua, Luzhou, Leshan and Liangshanzhou, as well as Yunnan's Zhoutong and Guizhou's Liupanshui and Bijie signed an agreement in Chengdu to collaborate on building a shipping center.
The agreement determined that the eight cities from the three provinces will work together to build the shipping center. The plan will be prioritized as a national strategy and will earn the government's support in terms of policies and funds.
Xie also said that the coverage and scale of the upstream Yangtze River economic belt should be increased to further boost its competitiveness and elevate its regional economic position and function.
The Panxi-Liupanshui region is located in the border areas of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. It has abundant rare earth resources and is strategically placed in the country.
