EPA fines Chinese quad bike importer US$725,000 for petrol fumes
THE US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined US importers of Chinese quad bikes US$725,000 for failing to adhere to regulations emission standards on petrol fumes.
Based in Plymouth, Minnesota, the Chinese-owned companies Zhejiang CFMOTO Power Co and Chunfeng Holding Group Co and its US distributor, CFMOTO Powersports, also agreed to replace fuel tanks on 1,000 recreational vehicles that emit petrol fumes.
The EPA said the quads were manufactured in China and imported into the United States between 2007 and 2013 without the required certification indicating that emissions would meet federal standards, reported American Shipper.
The agency discovered the alleged violations through joint inspections conducted with the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection and a review of import documents and other information provided by the companies.
The EPA filed an administrative complaint against CFMOTO Powersports (successor to CFMOTO America) in April 2013 and reached an agreement on the settlement through an alternative dispute resolution process.
