ILWU contract talks to focus on extra costs in Affordable Care Act

US WEST coast labour contract talks are to begin between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union in May over a two-week period to negotiate a new contract effective July 1.

Union members have some of the best medical plans in the country, but under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), they will be required to pay more.

Employers fear the union may press them to pick up the extra cost. Funding of pension schemes will be another issues to be discussed.

There has been growing worries that the PMA and ILWU already delayed talks will fail to produce a new contract by end of June and TSA. Shippers have recommended a longer time for the talks.

The ILWU are expected to focus mainly on healthcare benefits which has become a contentious issue.

The talks are sure to include the modernisation of cargo-handling operations through technology and automation. The PMA believe longshoremen will benefit in higher wages and increased work opportunities but many see loss of jobs through labour-saving devices.
