Jiangsu provincial port volume surpasses last year's two billion tonnes
TOTAL throughput at eastern China's Jiangsu province surpassed the two billion tonne mark achieved, representing a 9.5 per cent year on year throughput to 2.14 billion tonnes.
The four major ports in the province, Suzhou, Nantong, Lianyungang and Nanjing, each recorded a throughput of more than 200 million tonnes.
Last year, Jiangsu invested CNY12.6 billion (US$2.05 billion) on port projects, which brought 24 new berths of 10,000 tonnes and generated an additional capacity of 100 million tonnes.
In the past year, ports in the province inaugurated a total of 133 container shipping services and handled nearly 100,000 TEU of river-river and sea-river transshipments.
This year, Jiangsu plans to spend another CNY12 billion on port facilities and build 21 berths of 10,000 tonnes and over, bringing 90 million tonnes extra capacity to its ports. It also targets at a throughput tonnage of 2.2 billion tonnes, said Xinhua.
At the same time, Jiangsu province is to upgrade its infrastructures to enhance distribution capacity for port shipments by extending national expressways and railways to its port areas and upgrading the river navigational channels.
Jiangsu will also promote one-stop customs clearance services for transshipments and apply electronic gates to its port areas to enhance efficiency, and going greener by refitting gantry cranes from fuel to electricity-powered and deploy more LNG-powered trucks at port areas.
