Hutchison signs mega-player consortium for intra-Asia loop from Sydney
HUTCHISON's Sydney International Container Terminals (SICTL) is in a three-year deal with the Southeast Asia-Australia Service, a consortium of the United Arab Shipping Co, Hapag-Lloyd, Hanjin, China Shipping, RCL, OOCL and Hyundai.
The Southeast Asia-Australia Service operates a loop of five ships of between 4,200 and 4,700 TEU calling weekly at Singapore, Malaysia, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
SICTL chief executive Stephen Gumley said that "SICTL's ability to win the business demonstrated that the new terminal was quickly emerging as a viable alternative to the incumbent stevedores".
Mr Gumley also said the agreement means SICTL, will regularly handle container exchanges in the order of 1,500 TEU, on a par with local rivals.
"This underlines the consistent growth in SICTL's capabilities given initial operations just began last November and automated stacking crane operation in December. In doing the latter, SICTL became the first terminal to introduce a higher level of automated operation into Port Botany," he said.
