Hebei province plans to invest US$2.79 billion on ports this year

THE northern province of Hebei plans to spend CNY17 billion (US$2.79 billion) on port projects in 2014, building 17 new berths with a capability of handling 100 million tonnes more as well as 1.4 million TEU of extra capacity.

Hebei provincial container throughput is expected to increase to 1.8 million TEU this year while overall cargo is expected to surpass 900 million tonnes, Xinhua reports.



Last year, ports in Hebei province handled 1.34 million TEU, up 49.5 per cent while overall throughput exceeded 800 million tonnes.



Twelve projects are in the works, including Huanghua port's 200,000-tonne navigation channel and the construction of a coal terminal in Tangshan harbour's Caofeidian port area .



Hebei also intends to accelerate building of No 26 and 27 berths in Tangshan harbour at Jingtang port area. Also planned is the conversion of the multi-use terminal into container terminal at the Huanghua port area, which also seeks to encourage containerisation of bulk cargo.



Last year, Hebei built 18 new berths, bringing the total to 158, which has raised the port capacity by 120 million tonnes. Total provincial port capacity has topped two million TEU and 800 million tonnes in overall tonnage.
