Illicit drugs near bodies of two armed guards aboard Maersk Alabama

DRUGS and drug paraphernalia were found in a Maersk Alabama cabin where two American security contractors were found dead last week, revealed company spokesman Kevin Speers.

After citing a Seychelles police report, Mr Speer said: "Our foremost concern is safety at sea. Based on our experience with the contractor, this is an isolated incident. However, we have initiated a thorough review."

Maersk, he said, was working with the Trident Group security contractor who employed the men protecting Maersk ships transitting pirate invested waters off Somalia, reported American Shipper.

Mr Speers said Maersk would review the records of all security personnel to confirm that drugs tests, background checks and training requirements are currently up to date and re-testing personnel where necessary. There would also be an audit on hiring, training, performance evaluation and compliance practices as well as evaluating the shore leave policy.

In addition, he said, the Trident Group will be immediately implementing a random drug testing programme.

Mr Speers said contracted security is part of anti-piracy protection plans, noting that the Maersk Alabama is in high-risk areas along the east coast of Africa.

The Maersk Alabama was hijacked by pirates in April 2009, resulting in a lawsuit from 11 seamen. The hijacking also inspired a Hollywood film.
