South Carolina January port box volume up 7pc to 129,562 TEU
THE South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has announced that container volume rose by seven per cent in January compared to same month last year to 129,562 TEU.
In the fiscal year to date (July to January) box volume in Charleston grew by 5.5 per cent year on year to 942,013 TEU, up from 892,487 TEU over the same period the previous year.
A statement from port authorities said that since 2010, "SCPA has captured nearly half of all container volume growth in the South Atlantic market through the addition of new customers and cargo from discretionary markets, inland-favourable freight and growth of bulk transload operations".
Said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome: "Container volume in Charleston has grown consistently year over year since fiscal year 2010. We remain a top 10 port, and through our efforts to deepen the harbour and prepare for big ships to call in greater frequency, we are poised to meet the future growth of the industry."
