Yangkou port on Yangtze wins subsidy to repair navigation channel

CHINA'S Ministry of Transport has approved of CNY397.5 million's (US$65.55 million) subsidy for the 150,000-tonne navigational channel project at Yangtze River port Nantong's Yangkou port area.

Last year, Lusi, another port area of Nantong also won a subsidy of CNY180.5 million to build a 100,000-tonne navigational channel. Nantong has been receiving state government subsidy for two straight years, which has greatly eased Nantong's shortage of capital for port development.

Yangkou port area's 150,000-tonne navigation channel is 40.9 kilometres long, 334 metres wide and 15.8 metres deep. 18 kilometres of the channel needs to be dredged. After the project has been completed, 150,000 tonne oil carriers can sail on the navigational channel in single direction at high tide. LNG carriers, with 267,000 cubic metres can male it in or out any time.

Larger navigational channels at Yangkou port area will help to optimize port of Nantong's function. The local port authority has planned to refit some of the dry bulk terminals at the port area to petrochemical terminals.
