Hebei province's port investment exceeds schedule set last year

LAST year, northern province Hebei spent CNY18.5 billion (US$3.05 billion) on port projects, which is 8.8 per cent more than its annual investment schedule of CNY17 billion, according to Xinhua's report.

The Qinhuangdao port, one of the major ports in the province, invested CNY370 million while Tangshan spent CNY8.23 billion and Huanghua, another CNY9.9 billion.



A total of 18 new berths were built last year, bringing additional capacity to 120 million tonnes. Now the province has a total of 158 berths in operation, which amounted to 800 million tonnes in capacity, making Hebei the third largest province in China in terms of port capacity.



Last year, Hebei's ports lifted 890 million tonnes of cargo, up 16.8 per cent from 2012, which marked that the province has accomplished its target of port capacity and throughput tonnage of 800 million tonnes each.



The throughput of containers, coal, ores and steel all recorded growth greater than 15 per cent. Containers surged 49.5 per cent to 1.34 million TEU.



Qinhuangdao port lifted 388,000 TEU, up 12.8 per cent. Its throughput tonnage remained at the same level as in 2012 at 270 million tonnes. Tangshan recorded a throughput of 728,000 TEU in terms of containers and 450 million tonnes in terms of tonnage. Huanghua recorded a throughput of 230,000 TEU in terms of containers and 170 million tonnes in terms of tonnage.
