Weihai mulls container shipping service to North Korea this year
WEIHAI Port Group, operator of eastern China sea port Weihai in Shandong province, disclosed at a recent annual meeting that the port might start a container shipping service to North Korea this year, Xinhua reports.
Weihai Port Group aims to raise its container throughput by launching more services. It plans to start a new lane to Japan, increasing the number of its Japan services to six. The North Korea lane is also in its plan.
Weihai also plans to launch a number of domestic shipping service, including the container shipping service via Qingdao to Shanghai and the one via Qinhuangdao to Dalian.
Last year, Weihai's container throughput grew 16.6 per cent year on year to 650,000 TEU. Its throughput increased 14.1 per cent to 40.07 million tonnes. Bulk tonnage jumped up 35.4 per cent to 9.64 million tonnes.
This year, Weihai aims to achieve a box throughput of 700,000 TEU, bulk tonnage of 10 million tonnes and a ro-ro automobile throughput of 130,000 vehicles.
