Spanish 4,635-ton general cargo ship splits in two after losing power
THE 4,635-dwt general cargo ship Luno split in two in high winds after hitting a breakwater close to shore off the southwestern coast of France, Reuters reports.
Patrick Dallennes, a local government prefect, said the ship had between 120-160 cubic metres of fuel in its tanks. "For the moment the pollution is limited," he said.
In 110-kilometre an hour winds, the ship's 12 crew members, one of whom was injured, were airlifted to safety by helicopter and taken to a hospital in Bayonne.
The 100-metre Luno held 140 cubic metres of bunker. A maritime pollution alert was declared, but the pollution is said to be limited.
The empty freighter had just left Bayonne when engine problems caused it to drift in the gale when it was hurled against the breakwater, which also serves as a jetty with its forward section coming to rest there while the stern section was washed ashore.
