ICTSI to open US$100 million container terminal near Kinshasa, DRC
MANILA's International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) has announced a US$100 million investment in its first box terminal in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at Matadi near the capital Kinshasa.
"We have been following the economic developments in DRC closely and are proud that we can take part in building the needed infrastructure for the future growth of the country," said ICTSI chairman and president Enrique Razon.
ICTSI Congo DR, to open next year, will be on the Congo River at Matadi, already the main container gateway into the DRC serving the Kinshasa market.
The facility will, in Phase 1, be able to handle 120,000 TEU and 350,000 tonnes annually, potentially doubling in Phase 2 depending on demand.
Phase 1 will consist of two berths with a total length of 350 metres with its modern infrastructure, equipment and skilled staff that meet international standards.
ICTSI Congo DR is a joint venture owned by ICTSI with a 60 per cent stake and the local firm Simobile SPRL with 40 per cent.
"We believe we can make a positive impact and decrease total transport time and cost through a modern and efficient facility," said ICTSI Africa vice president Jens Floe.
ICTSI operates and develops marine terminals and port projects worldwide, and one of the first international terminal operators to take its expertise overseas. ICTSI is recognised for public-private partnerships with economies divesting of its port assets to the private sector.
