Zhuhai port's throughput surpasses 100 million tonnes for first time

WESTERN Guangdong province's port of Zhuhai had handled more than 100 million tonnes of freight in 2013 as of December 25, marking a robust increase of 30 per cent compared to the same period in 2012. This is the first time that the port's annual throughput exceeds 100 million tonnes.

By 2015, Zhuhai's port throughput is expected to surpass 150 million tonnes, according to Xinhua's report.

An official from Zhuhai's port authority said that the rapid growth in the port's throughput relies on its infrastructure expansion. In 2013, Zhuhai upgraded its handling and distribution facilities at its terminals, especially at the Gaolan port area. The port became one of the fastest developing in terms of handling efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Zhuhai currently has 148 berths in operation. 27 are 10,000-tonnes and over. Its capacity increased 26.27 per cent year on year to 149 million tonnes per year. There are still 19 projects in construction at the port. By 2015, the port's annual capacity will hit 200 million tonnes.
