MMEA Southern Region Seeks More Personnel, Bigger Capacity Boats
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Southern Maritime Region has applied to the MMEA headquarters to increase its personnel to 1,100 and acquire bigger capacity speed boats this year for more effective enforcement operations.
MMEA Southern Maritime Region enforcement chief Maritime First Admiral Adon Shalan said today its 700 personnel and twin-engine 700hp boats were insufficient to combat smuggling in the waters of the Melaka Strait.
The application letter sought the acquisition of four-engine 1,200hp boats which could easily intercept the speed boats of the smugglers, he told a news conference after attending a programme on the disposal of smuggled cigarettes at the MMEA Klang Maritime District office, here.
Adon said the MMEA had detected more than 100 smugglers' trails between Kuala Selangor and Padang Endau, Johor, often used to smuggle in contraband.
He also said that the cigarette carrying the "John" brand was smuggled into the country due to the huge demand for it in the country.
A total of 3.2 million smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of more than RM1 million, including sales tax and import duty, were disposed of by shredding today. The cigarettes were seized last year.
