Sichuan boosts trade westward and southward in 2013

THOUGH being a hinterland province, Sichuan succeeded in boosting its trade westward by launching the Chengdu-Europe Cargo Railway and southward by closer cooperation with ASEAN countries in 2013 despite the world's major economies are hurt by recession, Xinhua reports.

The number of trade that runs the Chengdu-Europe Railway has run already taken up nearly 40 per cent of the total of the cargo railways from China's hinterland regions to Europe. And with the 'southward strategy', ASEAN has overtaken Europe and US to become the largest trade partner of Sichuan.

On December 21 2013, the 31st run of the Chengdu-Europe Railway set off with 455 tonnes of freight from 25 manufacturers across China. After crossing border at Xinjiang's Alashankou checkpoint, the train will run past Kazakhstan and Russia and arrive at Polish city Lodz at the end. The whole journey will lasts 14 days and cover 9,826 kilometres.

Statistics from the General Adminstration of China Customs show that, as of the end of November 2013, the international cargo railways via Alashankou checkpoint, including the Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe, Chengdu-Europe, Zhengzhou-Xinjiang-Europe and Xi'an-Kazakhstan Railway, have run a total of 72 runs, carrying 6,188 TEU.

In the same period, the Chengdu-Europe Railway ran 28 runs and moved 2,200 TEU, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of the total.

Chengdu-Europe Railway's shorter time than ocean shipping and lower cost than air transport has attracted more and more users. Personal computer manufacturer Dell's Sichuan manager Huang Yunfei said, the railway enjoys only one third of the ocean shipping time, which is only five days longer than air transport, with only one fourth of the cost of air transport. This meets the demand from high value added goods in delivery time and cost.

On the other hand, Sichuan has been implementing its 'southward strategy' during recent years and is promoting closer cooperation with ASEAN countries while traditional markets like Europe and US are suffering from contraction.

During the first 10 month of 2013, bilateral trade between Sichuan and ASEAN grew 32.5 per cent, marking that ASEAN has overtaken US and Europe and become the largest trade partner of Sichuan.

The province is also speeding up the expansion of Chengdu airport. The airport is now operating 70 international services, which is the most among China's central and western regions. Last year, Chengdu customs also started to streamline customs clearance procedures for cargo moving between bonded zones and the airport to facilitate trade.

In 2014, the Chengdu-Europe Railway will started offering return service from Europe. Sichuan province will build a new railway connecting China's southern coast. Chengdu airport will commence new routes to US. These moves will further help to turn Sichuan from a hinterland region to a more open-up province for trade, said Tang Jiqiang, an analyst from a local university.
