Alataw Pass rail freight volume up 7pc to 17.7 million tonnes in 2013
NORTHWEST China's Alataw Pass checkpoint bordering Kazakhstan posted a year-on-year seven per cent increase in rail freight volume to 17.7 million tonnes as of the end of December in 2013, setting a record high since 1991 when it opened for cargo transport, reports Xinhua.
Export cargo volume in the period reached 5.48 million tonnes, while import volume climbed to 12.26 million tonnes.
Aggregate cargo volume via its rail checkpoints stands in the second place among the national rail checkpoints for 16 years in a row and exports ranks first of its kind in China for consecutive six years.
The rapid growth of the freight volume is attributed to the rail departments from China and Kazakhstan that have set up effective information sharing system at their checkpoint stations to meet strong trade demand from Central Asia as well as their efforts to enhance customs clearance efficiency.
The Alataw Pass Railway Station is one of the most important railway checkpoints in western China as the overland route for energy and resources imports. Along with the cargo trade volume increasing, it has become a major route for China and central Asian countries.
