CityJet to merge with InterSky to create business regional player
AIR France-KLM owned CityJet is to merge with German carrier InterSky to meet demand from business travellers for flight connections to regional hubs in Europe.
German aviation investor Hans Rudolf Woehrl plans to buy Dublin-based CityJet and Air France-KLM's subsidiary VLM, both based at London City Airport, to merge with InterSky.
"The aim is to create a new regional airline active across Europe that is big enough not to be pushed out by big carriers like Lufthansa," Mr Woehrl said in a previous report from German weekly magazine Wirtschafts Woche. This will support a market "for business travellers who are not in the big economic centres of Europe," he added.
The merger which would see it gain from CityJet's substantial operation at London City Airport of more than 480 weekly flights from a fleet of 38 aircraft to InterSky's current network of destinations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland operated by five aircraft.
The firm offer was made through Mr Woehrl's co-founding business Intro Aviation GmbH, which owns almost 75 per cent in InterSky, and is expected to complete within first quarter 2014.
The deal follows in the footsteps of UAE national carrier Etihad Airways' acquisition of 33.3 per cent stake in Swiss carrier Darwin Airline and rebrand launch of Etihad Regional to support its European operations.
