Latin American 2013 exports up 0.2pc, China demand growth tops 9pc

LATIN American exports were virtually flat in 2013, posting a second straight year of slow growth, though demand from China increased nine per cent, according to the Inter-American Development Bank, reports Atlanta area Air Cargo World.

Exports are expected to grow 0.2 per cent to US$1 trillion, said Latin American Trade Trend Estimates 2013. The report, drawn on data from 18 Latin American states, said exports declined in the first months of the year, after a downward trend that started in late 2012.

But because of a slight uptick in the third quarter estimates now suggest a small positive overall growth for full-year 2013.

Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela all reported export declines while Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay posted increases. Costa Rican and Guatemalan exports were flat, with declines reported in Honduras and Nicaragua. Only El Salvador and Panama reported improvements in Central America.

European demand fell five per cent, though Chinese demand increased nine per cent while Japanese and South Korean Latin imports fell.
