AirAsia X gives biggest order to Airbus after Cathay's Boeing buy
KUALA-LUMPUR's AirAsia X, low-cost carrier of the AirAsia Group, has signed the world's largest one-time order with Airbus of A330-300s at the Paris air show valued at US$6 billion.
The purchase will increase its current confirmed deliveries to 57, of which 10 include A350-XWB aircraft, by 2019 in an effort to meet rising demand for low-cost travel. The carrier has a growing network of 18 destinations from Malaysia to Asia, Australia and Saudi Arabia.
The deal coincides with Cathay Pacific's order with Boeing of twenty-one 777-9X aircraft for US$7 billion for the Hong Kong carrier's long hauls to North America and Europe.
Airbus president and CEO Farbrice Bregier said the A330 will prove a "perfect platform" with the lowest operating costs, true long-range flying capability and a proven track record of exceptional technical reliability.
