Airports Council International spots October cargo revival, but Africa slips

AIRPORTS Council International (ACI) reported a 4.1 per cent year-on-year air cargo revival in October with big gains made in the Far East.

Leading the pack were Asia-Pacific hubs with Hong Kong (up 6.1 per cent), Shanghai (up 10.7 per cent) and Seoul-Incheon (up 2.5 per cent) with overall regional traffic growing 4.5 per cent.

"The rise in air freight volumes is consistent with the recent improvements in international trade volumes and overall business confidence," ACI said.

"This is in stark contrast to previous months where growth was much lower or even in negative territory. The major top 10 airports posted gains in freight traffic," said the statement.

In term of volume, North America posted the biggest increase in October, up 5.1 per cent, having been near flat for most of 2013. Memphis volumes, powered by its FedEx base, increased 7.6 per cent.

Europe was up 4.2 per cent year-to-date with the region's biggest air cargo hub at Frankfurt rising 3.4 per cent. Africa slipped 8.1 per cent with a 13 per cent decline in Johannesburg, which accounts for nearly 20 per cent of the African total.
