Sandy 2012 diversion causes Virginia November box volume to fall 2.9pc

THE Port of Virginia posted a 2.9 per cent year-on-year decline to 192,918 TEU in November, but still managed a year-to-date 6.4 per cent growth and expects to produce a full-year six per cent increase.

November import containers came to 86,038 TEU, up 7.3 per cent year on year, while exports hit 106,880 TEU, up 5.6 per cent.

"It has been an exceptionally busy year in almost all facets of our operation," said Virginia Port Authority interim executive director Rodney Oliver.

"We're 122,305 TEU ahead of where we were at this time last year, so Virginia is looking at another very solid performance," he said.

November's downtick was attributed to last year's uptick when seven per cent of New York and New Jersey's cargo - 13,860 TEU - was diverted to Virginia because of Hurricane Sandy.

"The Sandy diversions gave us great numbers last November," Mr Oliver said. "But if you back out the diverted cargo from last November's totals, this November would still have been ahead of last year by 4.5 per cent."

On a calendar-year basis, the port's rail volume is 12.8 per cent ahead of the same period in 2012. The port has experienced double-digit rail growth year on year in 12 of the last 13 months.
