Swire, Carpenters team up on Papua New Guinea service as demand falls
THE China Navigation Company Pte Ltd (CNCo), the deep sea shipping arm of the UK-based Swire Group, and Carpenters Shipping, a unit of Malaysian conglomerate MBf Holdings, have agreed to capacity sharing arrangement, reports Alphaliner.
On the Asia-Papua New Guinea trade, Carpenters will supply the 1,700-TEU Hansa Nordburg into the existing CNCo south east Asia-PNG service and will have access to other CNCo services covering PNG. CNCo operates these services under Swire Shipping.
This is organised "in response to the sustained decline in cargo volumes from south east Asia to Papua New Guinea combined with escalating costs", said Swire.
It will be implemented before the end of December with the existing service frequency and port coverage offered by CNCo-Swire remaining unchanged. Carpenters will improve its offering through its participation in several Swire services, including direct China-PNG links.
Carpenters will now offer a total of 64 voyages to PNG per annum instead of the 17 it currently offers with its two services, employing the chartered 1,078-TEU Pac Antilia and the Pac Aquarius.
It launched this service in March 2010 with four ships of in the 900-1,100 TEU range, then reducing it to three ships in June 2010 and then down to two ships in September 2011.
Carpenters will then be left with a single operated ship, with this new arrangement with CNCo.
