Savannah posts 6.6pc November box increase, cites new Asian customers
THE Port of Savannah posted a 6.6 per cent year-on-year container volume increase to 243,233 TEU in November, also recording a 7.3 per cent rise in overall cargo at all terminals to 2,414,630 tons in the same period.
"New customers, combined with better than anticipated growth in the national economy in recent months, have boosted terminal throughput for November and for the fiscal year to date," said Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) executive director Curtis Foltz.
New customers range from importers of appliances such as Haier America Trading to the expanded exports of Toyotas, Nissans and other vehicles. Savannah has also seen recent private investment in refrigerated cargo warehousing, boosting US poultry exports.
The GPA posted a 5.5 per cent year-on-year increase to 1.3 million TEU for the fiscal year to date in first five months of the fiscal year through November and lifted 8.8 per cent more overall cargo to 12 million tons in the same period.
Colonel's Island ro-ro terminal moved 275,020 auto and heavy machinery units over the fiscal year to date for a 5.6 per cent improvement. Ocean Terminal in Savannah has added another 10,874 units of roll-on/roll-off cargo for a total of 285,894 and a 7.4 per cent gain in total ro-ro over the same period last year.
