Manila's ICTSI gets go-ahead to run Nigeria's Lekki container terminal

MANILA's International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) and joint investor Singapore-based Tolaram Group have been given the go-ahead by Nigerian government to run a container terminal in Nigeria's Lagos Free Trade Zone.

The 21-year build, operate and transfer contract for the Lekki International Container Terminal Services (LICTS) facility will involve an overall investment of US$1.4 billion to build the terminal of initial annual capacity of 2.5 million TEU when it opens in 2016.

The terminal, 80 kilometres east of downtown Lagos, will have a 1.2-kilometre long quay to accommodate the handling of 10,000-TEU ships supported by handling equipment, including 14 super-post-panamax cranes and $225 million in terminal software.

"It is reflective of Nigeria's deep commitment towards development of world-class maritime infrastructure to serve as an enabler of fast economic growth in Nigeria as well as the West African region," said ICTSI financial officer for Africa Gagan Seksaria, reported London's Lloyd's List.

The region faces stiff competition with terminal operators seeking private-public partnerships in deepsea ports.

Dutch-based APM Terminals plans to build and operate at the port of Badagry, 40 kilometres west of Lagos, which will include a two-berth box terminal of capacity of one million TEU for ro-ro and general cargo.
