Port operations at Merek, Indonesia, subject to monsoon berthing rules
BAD monsoon weather in Indonesia from the end of November until March has resulted in the introduction of special guidelines to ensure safe operations at the Vopak Terminal at the Port of Merak, 100 kilometres west of Jakarta, reports GAC Hot Ports News.
In the coming weeks and months, heavy rain, large swells and strong winds may cause delays to berthing/un-berthing, loading/unloading and departure of vessels from the port.
"Upon arrival, masters of vessels must be aware of any local tidal or current conditions at the berth that could affect safe mooring, prevailing wind conditions that could affect the safety of operations, other conditions affecting operations such as wave/swell/visibility/electrical storm and the effect of heavy rainfall or drought on the berth or approach channel," said the report.
"The master must also ensure that his vessel is securely moored and that weather conditions are monitored. A stand-by crew must be deployed for possible emergency unberthing and safety access between the jetty and ship provided.
"The jetty master must be alerted immediately if the discharging process causes any damage or has created a hazardous situation, or is likely to," the report said.
