Waterfront Commission of NY is 'pale, male and stale', responds ILA
THE International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) has responded to the Waterfront Commission of New York's criticism that its workforce has too many white men.
This follows from ILA's lawsuit filing with the New York Shipping Association to prevent "interference" by the watchdog agency in a dispute over a lack of diversity in the hiring of dock workers.
ILA's posting of pictures on social media network Facebook, of its own black officials alongside photos of the agency's management titled "pale, male and stale" was considered a low blow by the Waterfront Commission executive director Walter Arsenault.
"It's a typical example of the ILA misrepresenting the facts. This is just another attempt by the ILA to divert attention from its record," he said, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.
Its commission secretary and directors of information technology and intelligence are Hispanic, its controller is Chinese-American, its general counsel is Egyptian-American, and its remaining workforce are diverse also, said Mr Arsenault.
The Waterfront Commission's breakdown of staff is unavailable in its annual report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and its HR director was unavailable for comment, added the report.
