Turkmenistan to buy new tankers and cargo ships
Turkmenistan plans to purchase oil tankers, cargo, passenger ferries and towing vessels following the order of the country's State Service of Maritime and River Transportation, government information service Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary reported.
This issue was discussed at the meeting of Cabinet of Ministers. According to the report, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov underscored the importance of the dynamic development of the country's marine fleet, which will greatly enhance their international oil and oil products transportation.
"Turkmenbashi seaport is strengthening its position as an important international water transport communications center, specific steps are being taken to further modernize and technologically renovate this enterprise, and also great attention is being paid to the improvement of economic potential of the country's maritime transport," Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.
In August, it was reported that in line with the results of the international tender, the Turkish Gap Insaat will build a modern seaport in Turkmenbashi city on the Caspian seashore by 2017. The seaport will also include ship repair and a shipbuilding yard. The project's cost is estimated at $2 billion.
On the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan borders with Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran.
In recent years, regional transport projects have intensified there. Upgraded large-capacity vessels of the Turkmen trade fleet are actively involved in Caspian cargo transportation, serving international routes from the port of Turkmenbashi to other Caspian ports. They are expanding the geography and variety of the transported goods.
The construction of a new modernized port in Turkmenbashi will significantly increase the volume of cargos passing through the port, by means of creation of specialized berths equipped with productive loading-unloading equipments, covered warehouse, warehouse spaces with modern coating, developed railway and motor transport infrastructures.
