Peel Ports to install one terminal operating system in the UK, Ireland
BRITAIN's second largest ports group, Peel Ports, is introducing the Navis N4 terminal operating system at eight sites in the UK and Ireland.
The upgrade is driven by the development of Liverpool2, the new GBP300 million (US$482.9 million) container terminal, from which the group will standardise and centralise its terminal operating systems.
In 2015, Liverpool2's eight megamax quay cranes and semi-automated Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry (CRMG) yard cranes, linked to the Navis system, will make it one of the most efficient terminals in northern Europe, able to handle two 13,500-TEUers at once.
"We operate in an increasingly competitive market and understand, we need to invest in full integration of terminal operating technology," said Peel Ports port director David Huck.
The Navis system will first be installed at the Royal Seaforth Container Terminal near the Liverpool2 construction site, and will then be installed at other Peel terminals by 2016.
Across the UK each year Peel Ports handles 1.2 million TEU, which it expects to grow to 2.3 million TEU over the next five years, 65 million tonnes of cargo and 26,000 vessel movements
