Davies Turner to deploy more longer trailers to cut numbers of trips

KEEN to grow its fleet of longer truck trailers, UK freight forwarder Davies Turner says it aims to take advantage of changes in the law allocating the firm more 15.6-metre trailers.

When loaded to capacity, the company estimates its six 15.6-metre trailers could eliminate up to 100 trips over 12-months. An expansion to 10 trailers could remove 170 feeder trips.

"The two 15.65-metre trailers have already saved a good many trips and resulted in fewer vehicles on the motorway," said joint managing director Philip Stephenson.

"We expect to be allocated at least four more and would really like a further six more to service our overnight network connecting Cumbernauld in Scotland's Central Belt, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Dartford," Mr Stephenson said.

The move comes as the Department for Transport (DfT) has decided to expand its 10-year trial of longer semi-trailers, which started last year as 1,250 of the initial 1,800 vehicle allocations remain unused.

The two metre longer trailers offer 15 per cent more capacity than the 13.6 metre trailer of a similar specification.
