Khorgas border checkpoint upgrade elevates rail crossing to first grade

THE CNY1.9 billion (US$312 million) upgrade at Xinjiang's Sino-Kazakhstan border railway checkpoint at Khorgas has been completed, raising it to a 20 million tonne annual capacity and making it a first-class checkpoint, Xinhua reports.

The Khorgas checkpoint opened in December 2012 with only three broad gauge tracks and simple inspection facilities, from short of meeting its growing cargo handling demand.

In the last year, Xinjiang's railway authority expanded by building an inspection yard, 14 broad gauge tracks, 17 standard gauge tracks, six transshipment tracks, 12 sub-tracks, a classification yard, a passenger terminal and a maintenance facility. The expanded area covers 90,000 square metres.

Annual volume is expected reach 20 million tonnes by 2020 and 35 million tonnes by 2030, becoming the distribution hub for China's exports to Central Asian countries and playing an important role China's and Central, Western Asia as well as European trade.

As of October 20, Khorgas railway border checkpoint handled 1.25 million tonnes since it commenced operation in 2012. It has become a bridge for economic and cultural exchange between China and central Asian countries.
