FedEx expects year's busiest day to set new record due to e-commerce
FEDEX Corp is gearing up for its busiest day in company's history when it expects to move more than 22 million shipments globally on December 2, with the increasing volumes driven by the boom in online shopping.
The company anticipates it will handle 85 million shipments across its global network during its busiest week of the year, December 1-7. This is 13 per cent higher than last year's busiest week.
"In addition to e-commerce, retail inventory such as personal consumer electronics, apparel and luxury goods will drive the increase in FedEx holiday volumes and the Asia Pacific region plays an important role in the production of these goods," said FedEx Express Asia Pacific chief David Cunningham.
E-commerce is thriving globally at three to four times the rate of traditional retail buying in brick and mortar stores, and the Asia Pacific region is at the forefront with sales expected to grow 23 per cent, accounting for nearly one-third of all e-commerce sales worldwide and outpacing the rest of the world, according to a report from US eMarketer: "B2C Ecommerce Climbs Worldwide, as Emerging Markets Drive Sales Higher".
FedEx said in a statement it will boost its global workforce with tens of thousands of seasonal positions to help handle the spike in holiday shipments.
