China to build first non-coastal meat hinterland checkpoint for imports

CENTRAL China's Henan province is to build up a meat import customs checkpoint, which will be the first of such facilities in the hinterland region and will shorten transits of imported meat to hinterland markets.

The move comes in the wake of the US$7.1 billion acquisition deal struck in September, in which China's meat producing giant Shuanghui Group bought US' largest pork producer Smithfield Foods. The facility is said to have positive effect on the trade of meat between China and US and their cooperation of meat production, according to Xinhua.

There are currently 44 authorised checkpoints for meat import in China, all on the coast at Shanghai, Tianjin and Liaoning.

Meat must be imported via authorised checkpoint with regulated facilities such as refrigerated warehouses, trained inspectors and special laboratories for inspection.

Location of the new checkpoint might be chosen among Zhengzhou airport, Zhengzhou railway station and Luoyang airport, said Lu Jingang, an official from Henan's inspection authority. Leihe city, where Shuanghui Group's headquarters are located, will also be a possible candidate.

Ministry of Commerce researcher Mei Xinyu said as China's demand for food continues to grow, US has become an important origin of imported grain, meat and oil for China. America's abundant pork exports will meet the demand from a vast market like China with competitive price.
