Asiana flies cargo from Seattle's Sea-Tac airport on 747-400 freighter

ASIANA Airlines started cargo service this week at Sea-Tac Airport with a Boeing 747-400 freighter, reports the Seattle Times.

The Port of Seattle said securing the Asiana service is part of a long-term goal to triple cargo volume at the airport.

The port is spending more than US$20 million to improve parking and apron space for air freighters and expanding the underground fuelling system.

Sea-Tac's air cargo trade with Asia increased 12 per cent in 2012 thanks to exports of fruit, seafood and high-tech machinery, but air cargo increased only two per cent as European traffic declined.

The port says Asiana is the sixth carrier with regularly scheduled service at Sea-Tac. FedEx is the largest, accounting for 43 per cent of the volume.

"From Fairbanks' perspective, that's an awesome alternative," said Fairbanks International Airport spokeswoman Angie Spear. "It leverages the system and uses both airports without new construction."
