Fairbanks airport sees Anchorage spillover role for 'gas-n-go' freighters

GROWTH at Anchorage airport is prompting planners in Fairbanks, Alaska, to become a major spillover stopover for transiting air freighters in need of refuelling, reports the Fairbanks News-Miner.

Anchorage, is the second-biggest for air cargo among US airports with nearly 220,000 daily takeoffs and landings a year and steady growth between North America and Asia is expected to outstrip its capacity.

Planners at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport released a draft plan last month for dealing with that growth. Part of the master plan calls for sending cargo planes to Fairbanks.

Fairbanks is already the alternate airport for Anchorage-bound cargo planes, which are occasionally rerouted north when weather or congestion dictates.

One plan would designate Fairbanks for some "gas-n-go" cargo flights - those that don't transfer or offload cargo at the airport before departing.

The plan would provide capacity for an additional 23,000 flights to Anchorage before Fairbanks was needed as a secondary destination, but suggests it is several years away.
