A seriously ill crewman has been airlifted from an LNG tanker at sea off Darwin.
The Northwest Storm Petrel was on its way from Japan to Dampier in Western Australia but changed course to come within 50 kilometres of the Northern Territory capital when the 56-year-old Australian crew member fell ill.
CareFlight's Ian Badham says a rescue helicopter landed on the deck of the 272 metre LNG carrier and a flight nurse took over the man's treatment.
"Conditions this morning are good and the ship has diverted its course to be close to Darwin, within range of our CareFlight helicopter," he said.
The man is now in Royal Darwin Hospital where his condition is described as "stable".
The ABC understands that because of the state of the ship's air-filled LNG tanks, it is not permitted to enter Darwin Harbour.
The tanker is now back on course for Dampier.
