Maritime community to gather for Singapore Maritime Week 2013

The 8th Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) will take place from 7 to 12 April 2013. Organised by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), SMW will once again gather the international maritime community in Singapore for a week of conferences, dialogues, exhibitions and social events.
Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive, MPA said, "I am happy to note that SMW 2013 has once again received strong support from the maritime community. Some of the key events in this year's SMW include the International Maritime Awards, the 7th Singapore Maritime Lecture, SeaAsia Exhibition and Conference, and the International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference and Exhibition that will end with a full-deployment, multi-agency chemical spill exercise."
7th Singapore Maritime Lecture
This year, Mr James Hughes-Hallett, Chairman, John Swire & Sons Limited, will be sharing his insights on strategic maritime issues at the Singapore Maritime Lecture. The 7th Singapore Maritime Lecture will take place at Shangri-la Hotel on 10 April. This annual high-level forum, attended by prominent personalities and decision-makers in the maritime industry, is by invitation only. Previous speakers include Singapore's former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, Mr Nils Smedegaard Andersen, Chief Executive Officer of A.P Moller-Maersk Group and Mr Koji Sekimizu, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization.
Mr Hughes-Hallett joined the Swire Group in 1976 and assumed his current responsibilities in 2005. Prior to this, he held various management positions in the group's operations in Japan, Taiwan, Australia and Hong Kong. From 1989 to 1993, he was Managing Director of John Swire & Sons Proprietary Limited in Australia. From 1993 to 1998, he was director of Swire Pacific Limited, with executive responsibility for Swire's ship-owning, insurance and consumer trading interests; during this period, he was also Chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, Swire Pacific Offshore and China Navigation Company. He was Chairman of Swire Pacific Limited and Cathay Pacific Airways Limited from 1999 to 2004.
Mr Hughes-Hallett is also the current Chairman of the United States Cold Storage Inc, and a director of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, Swire Pacific Limited, James Finlay Limited and HSBC Holdings Limited.
SMW Public Outreach Activities
Similar to previous years, SMW 2013 will continue to offer public outreach programmes that promise to engage the public through a series of fun and educational activities.
SMW Exhibition - "An Insight into Maritime Singapore"
This year's SMW Exhibition will be held at Plaza Singapura from 1 to 7 April. The exhibition takes on an educational theme, displaying interesting artefacts and exhibits that will offer a glimpse into Maritime Singapore. Admission to SMW Exhibition is free.
